Here we'll see how a simple yet accurate analogue speedometer circuit can be constructed at home using just a single IC and a few external passive components. The speedometer can be used with all 2-wheeler, 3-wheeler, even in bicycles for indicating their speeds. Referring to the simple speedometer circuit diagram below, we can see the IC LM occupying the center stage in the configuration and forms the main detector device.
As can be see the internal of the IC comprises an input differential comparator, followed by a charge pump, an opamp buffer and a emitter follower amplifier stage. Pin 1 of the IC becomes the tachometer input and accepts the magnetic pick up information in the form of varying magnetic electrical pulses. The differential opamp compares the input with its ground referenced inverting input and amplifies even the minutest pulse detected at pin 1. The function of the charge pump stage is to hold and pump the above amplified signals such that with increasing frequency the corresponding amplified output from the differential stage is sustained and boosted proportionately across the next opamp buffer stage.
The final proportional boosted potential is fed through the emitter follower transistor across the 10k resistor. This can be directly read by connecting an analogue moving coil voltmeter across the 10k resistor.
The magnetic pick-up for the proposed speedometer circuit could be made by winding 50 turns of 30SWG wire over a small ferrite ring. The wheel should be complemented with an appropriately dimensioned magnet stuck or fixed over the rim such that the two elements come face to face once on every single rotation.

The number and variety of these transmissions makes that decision pretty easy. So let's say you've jumped into the deep end of the pool and stuffed a 4L80E automatic or a T six-speed into your Chevelle, and at some point in the conversion, you realized that these gearboxes long ago flushed those clunky gear-driven mechanical speedometers. Every late-model transmission now transmits what is called a vehicle speed sensor VSS electrical pulse. Yes, there are aftermarket extension housings that convert to a mechanical drive if you want to go that route, but we were looking for something that integrates the smoothness and accuracy of a late-model electric speedometer.
There are several ways to go about this electric conversion. Let's start with the easiest route.

Now let's assume you are using a factory manual overdrive like the T six-speed. These transmissions typically output a signal from the VSS, which can be wired directly to an electronic aftermarket speedometer. The aftermarket speedos, such as those from Auto Meter or VDO, are designed to be calibrated by simply pushing a button on the speedo, driving a known distance 2 miles in the Auto Meter exampleand punching the button again.
This calibrates the speedo to your particular tire size and gear ratio, making the setup ridiculously easy. The only time you might need a calibration box would be if you were trying to calibrate a late-model transmission to a factory electronic speedometer. As an example, connect the VSS output to the Classic Instruments unit and then wire it to the speedometer.
Hit the button on the interface, drive the car an exact measured mile, and hit the button again. This box, the SN, is an upgraded version of Classic Instruments' original box that eliminates flipping dipswitches. This conversion box would only be required when working with a factory-style speedometer. Another route will eliminate connections to the transmission altogether via a GPS speedometer signal.
Auto Meter, Classic Instruments, and others sell a GPS box with an antenna that triangulates from a minimum of three geo-synchronized satellites to establish very accurate speed and distance information that is fed to the speedometer. These units will work with virtually all aftermarket electronic speedometers. The only downside to these that we see is they sometimes require a minute or so to establish satellite contact and can lose signal in long tunnels.
So then the issue comes down to finding an electric speedometer. Budget speedometers generally need an interface box to calibrate the signal between it and the VSS sender. Regular Kitchen Fork. Parts needed: 1. Replacement Stepper Motors - Available from Dr. Speedometer in any quantity plus upgrades for your gauges. Yours may vary in appearance, and have more motors, but the procedure is basically the same for all GM instrument clusters. First, remove the clear plastic lens by gently prying outwards on the black tabs, use the Multitool. Or screwdriveror whatever it is you are using. Rotate each needle counter clockwise until they come to their stopping point.
Stick the tape to the gauge face plate directly below the needles. Look straight down on each gauge and make a mark directly in line with the tip of the needles. These marks will give you a reference point to set your needles back exactly where they were originally after you replace the stepper motors, ensuring accurate readings upon reinstallation.
If you need to grab a sharpie with a thick enough tip so that it is the same size as the point of the needle so you don't mess this step up. Now slide the fork under the gauge base being sure the fork tines are going around either side of the shaft.
Next, pry upwards on the gauge base by pressing down on the fork handle. Be careful not to scratch your face plate. Pry firmly but slowly and the gauge will slide upwards and off the shaft. Move on to each gauge using the same technique.
Remove the black back cover from the white inner frame by gently prying outwards on these black tabs. The measurement and input part of the project relies on this part. The idea is to place a magnet on the cycle wheel and add a hall effect sensor onto the frame so that every time the magnet crosses the sensor, the arduino knows a revolution is completed and it can calculate the speed and the distance. The sensor used here is the classic A hall effect sensor. This sensor pulls its output low when a particular pole faces the correct orientation. The orientation is very important as the outer pole will not effect the output.
Here are some pictures showing the proper orientation. Also the hall effect sensor requires a 10k pullup resistor. This in my project is substituted with the 20k pull-up resistors in the arduino. Placing the magnet carefully is important. Placing it a little to far can result in inconsistent reading or missing revolutions and placing it very close may result in the magnet touching the sensor which is not very desirable.
If you observe carefully, the wheel will be having some tilt with the axis and this will result in crusts and troughs.
How to Fix a Speedometer Cable
Try placing the magnet in trough. I personally did not take so much efforts. This display is theoretically optional but you need something to display the speed and the distance and sped in real time. Revolutions of wheel will be measured by magnet and hall sensor. I used servo motor with arrow and scale to show the speed, it looks like "analog". Also I used 7 segment display to show distance odometeralso arduino write odo in its EEPROM after bicycle is stopped, so odo keeps in Arduino and not clears after system reboot.
